1. Added sugars
Reducing sugar intake is a good idea for everyone, and it’s especially important if you have arthritis. Sugars are present in various foods like sweets, soft drinks, ice cream, and even items like barbecue sauce, salad dressings, and ketchup.
A study that included 217 individuals with rheumatoid arthritis found that sugary soda and desserts were identified as the foods most likely to make their symptoms worse among a list of 20 options.
2. Processed & red meats
Some studies suggest that eating red meat and processed meat can lead to inflammation, which might make arthritis symptoms worse.
For instance, individuals who consume a lot of processed and red meats might have higher levels of inflammation markers like interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), and homocysteine.
A study involving 217 people with rheumatoid arthritis also noted that red meat often exacerbated arthritis symptoms.
In 2019, a review suggested that diets excluding red meat, especially plant-based diets, could potentially improve arthritis symptoms.
3. Foods with Gluten
Gluten-containing foods may pose problems for certain arthritis patients, especially those dealing with gluten sensitivity or celiac disease.
The primary issue is inflammation, and some people experience increased inflammation when they consume gluten. This inflammation is a key contributor to arthritis symptoms like pain and swelling.
Both celiac disease and some types of arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis) are autoimmune diseases, and gluten consumption can trigger or worsen autoimmune responses in some cases.
4. Foods rich in salt
High sodium diets are closely linked to inflammation – a significant contributor to arthritis discomfort.
Salt has water-retaining properties, causing bloating and additional pressure on the joints. This can be particularly uncomfortable for individuals already dealing with joint pain and stiffness.

Studies indicate that consuming heavily processed foods could potentially raise the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis by promoting inflammation and obesity, both of which are known risk factors for this condition.
